- Description
- In the context of current efforts at establishing a national framework for recognizing practice as research, a window of opportunity seems to be open for discussions on the nature of research, and indeed the nature of knowledge, in theatre studies. This paper is a contribution toward articulating at once a methodological and an epistemological concern: it provides an overview of the methods in which photographs have been used as sources of data in research; it also attempts to articulate and argue for a particular understanding of the nature of theatre knowledge as corporeal, and how this may impact on research methodology, specifically in terms of using photographs. By intervening in theoretical assumptions of what is legitimate theatre knowledge, the paper ultimately attempts to contribute to laying the theoretical groundwork for the acceptance of practice as research. As Ball and Smith argue, ‘the theoretical framework sets an agenda for the types of researchable questions that can be addressed’ (1992: 3); conversely, to expand the types of researchable questions that are possible in the field of theatre, theoretical frameworks that legitimise practice as knowledge should be articulated (or re-articulated), and this is one such attempt.
